well here it is a brown turdgen 84 z28 mild v8 this is my sisters boyfriends new ride ,,,,car has 55k original miles ,,,, hasn't been flipped no rust on undercarrige ,,was repainted at some point ,,,, a young 20yr old had it ,,,kid didn't know how to wrench on it ,,,,kid had it for 2 weeks ,,,,2nd day on road car cranked over but wouldn't start ,,,, kid sent it to a garage spent aditional $500 on repairs and garage failed to fix problem ,,,, it has a v8 with edlebrock intake and 2 barrel tbi ,,,the garage put new sensors on tbi with new injectors ,,,,kid ran out of cash and had to sell he wanted 3 g's we got him down to 2 g's and kid payed for tow to new home ,,,, felt bad but kid agreed etc ,,,, my sisters boyfriend knows a little but over all not a wrencher ,,,, so i wrench on it ,,,, so we started after some diag that fuel pump quit ,,, so we pull sending unit out to find a carb style sending unit,,,, later we discover someone put a cheap inline airtex external elec fuel pump ,,,,,it kicked on but no pressure ,,,probably why the garage didn't condem it or were taking advantage of a unknowledgeable customer ,,,,, so we tossed in another airtex pump same as what had ,,,, got car running ,,,,new pump quit after 1 week ,,,,, so i convinced Bob to carb swap it ,,,, so we started with installing a mechanical fuel pump ,,,,motor has centerbolt valve covers and not sure of motors yr with that didn't know if cam had a lobe for mechanical pump but block had provisions for 1 ,,,, got the car running with mechanical pump ,,,, i didn't understand it ,,,TBI runs 14 psi and shes running on 7 psi ,,,runs good to ,,,would have expected run like garbage being under pressured ,,,,as we were digging further into the car we discovered someone installed a painless type engine harness ,,,,, which i thought wasn't best idea ,,,, the cost of a non tbi aftermarket intake ,,,conversion plate for tbi and harness ,,,, more costly than just making it carb ,,,, so seeing new owner isn't much of a wrencher its going to get a hei dizzy and a edlebrock 600 cfm carb keep it as less complicated as possible ,,,,, think its a good car for a semi newbie hot rodder in training car
well now that the mechanical fuel pump is in running steady ,,,, I scored dude a edlebrock 600 cfm electric choke carb for $75.00 and he bought the hei distributor new for $50.00 so should be good ,,,,, also found a posi stock rearend for $100.00 ,,,,we will get this pig burning soon ,,,, only thing got to research is how to get stock tach to work off the hei dizzy ,,,, not sure how those are wired etc ,,,has the tach filter etc ,,,,, will figure it out ,,,,this whore is gonna become a lady haha
getting closer ,,, just have to hook up throttle cable ,,, and fuel feed and fire it up and check timing then hook up the wiring kit for trans 4th gear
I will see how he feels about his tires lol ,,,going to pick away at it this weekend ,,, he bought red wires and I had him pick up wire loom brackets hope running by sunday
got crackin on the z28 yesturday finished carb swap and ran some cut to fit plug wires ,,,, she fired rite up ,,,just gotta check timing and do more clean up under hood heres before and after pics
thanks G ,,, going to get him to toss some 4:11 gears and a posi in it ,,,give it some snap when drop the hammer ,,,, see if he takes the bait lol ,,, make some suggestions jim see if I can get him to run with it lol
update havent been wrenching on the z but we have new parts to toss in ,,,new aluminum trans pan ,,, a tci 4th gear lock up switch kit ,,, and we picked up a richmond 373 gear and aburn posi for it ,,,, threw in a new kenwood head unit to ,,,got the complete posi unit used for $350.00
small update the z kept flooding out ,,,, especially on brake stands ,,,,, learned some new info on the edlebrock carbs ,,,,learned the accelerator pump stroke is adjustable so I hooked it up to have the shortest stroke possible also while under the hood my unthinking ass had the dizzy hooked up to a ported vacuum port so hooked it to unported and lastly the make shift throttle bracket was loose and pulled towards the front of car so I replaced throttle bracket ,,,,now getting full throttle ,,,, on test drive the car found its balls lol ,,,, couple other minor things picked up rear window louvers for short coin and hooked up a nice kenwood sterio ,,,, still waiting on getting the posi in that's it for now
